Loughlinstown Hospital
On the week of Monday the 5th of March, I began my weeks work experience in St. Columcille's Hospital in Loughlinstown.
On the Monday, I was in with the Speech and Language Therapy Department. This department takes care of people that might have had strokes or people that were born with cleft lips an so on.
On the Tuesday I was in with the Injuries Unit. This Department takes care of people with fractured wrists, toes, fingers, and so on. I really enjoyed this day and it had been my favourite until Wednesday came along and I was introduced to Physiotherapy and Cardiac Rehabilitation. I thoroughly enjoyed physio and would definitely be interested in taking a further look at it in the future.
The final two days consisted of Radiology and XRays. Although they were both quite captivating, I don't think I would like to have a job stuck in a radioactive room. I really enjoyed this week and it was definitely one of if not the principal week of work experience so far.

Arthur Cox Solicitors
On the week commencing Monday the 26th of February I began my work experience in Arthur Cox Solicitors in Dublin. Although the placement was supposed to last a week, I could only attend on the Monday and the Tuesday due to the snow.
Arthur Cox's HQ is situated in the middle of Dublin City. I was one of five students involved in the placement. For the short time I was there I learned a lot about being a solicitor and about the exams and qualifications required.
Although it seems like a very interesting job, I do not think that I will go on to be a solicitor. The working hours are quite unfortunate and I don't think that I am one suited for filling out paperwork.
All in all it was an interesting two days and I really enjoyed it.
Alison Canavan - Mental Health
On the 6th of November had a very inspirational talk from Alison Canavan. Alison is a highly qualified meditation instructor and knows a lot about the world of mental health. Alison told us that she used to be a model when she was a teenager. However, although this life may seem glamorous, she actually suffered from depression and an extreme alcohol addiction. Her path to recovery and comfort again is what inspired us all because when things seem dark you can always turn them around.
IT Is Not For Geeks
On Friday the 29th of September, our year was given a talk by two employees of Dell on how It Is Not Just For Geeks. They started off by telling us about their jobs and what it is like to work for Dell. We were then shown a video about the different jobs in Dell and we heard employees speak about their jobs and what they like about Dell. They said that they get the opportunity to travel abroad and sometimes work from home. The talk changed my opinion on IT and I now see it as an interesting and enjoyable career over a boring one.
Peter McVerry
On Wednesday the 15th of November, a man named Francis Doherty from the Peter McVerry trust came in to talk to the YSI committee. Peter McVerry is a charity for the homeless. The charity works to try and prevent homelessness all over Ireland. Francis told us that homelessness has got twice as bad in the last year and that it does not get the publicism it deserves. The talk was very helpful when coming up with our YSI project and we decided to do it on homelessness.
Carlingford Adventure Centre
On the week commencing Monday the 19th of February we began our weeks trip to Carlingford Adventure Centre in Co.Louth.
The week consisted of various outdoor activities including canoeing, zip lining, laser tag, climbing, and much more. Upon arrival, we were given our bedrooms and our roommates. I was really happy with my roommates and I felt that I bonded with a few people I would not normally talk with.
Although the week was very enjoyable, an abundance of people got sick and caught various colds and coughs. Thankfully I was not amongst the outcasts but a couple of my roommates were. My favourite activity was the zip lining. I got a lot of satisfaction from the speed you fly at when going down a line.
Besides the ill and unwell, I think everyone really enjoyed the week and I feel like the whole group came a lot closer together.
Musical
On Tuesday the 6th of February until Thursday the 8th, our year took part in this years TY Musical "Legally Blonde".
We had started preparing for the show all the way back in November. Although it was only a couple of months before the show, it seemed like we had been rehearsing for years. Unfortunately, I was not chosen as lead role but instead I would be a dancer.
On the opening night everybody was very nervous and worried that they might forget their lines or make a fool out of themselves on stage. However, once the opening scene had finished everyone seemed to settle and find their feet.
By the end of the last night everyone was very depressed and emotional that we would not be performing the show again but quite proud of themselves that we all put on an entertaining show.

YSI Carol Service
On Thursday the 21st of December, the YSI group headed off to Stephens Green in Dublin City Centre to take part in a Christmas carol service in aid of SVDP. We spent over 2 hours singing carols and bringing Christmas spirit to everyone that walked by. It was a very enjoyable day and we also raised a lot of money for an excellent cause.
Tiglin Dignity Bags
Over the Christmas period, the YSI group collected Dignity Bags to give to a charity called Tiglin. Tiglin are a charity based in Ashford that try to help homeless people in Dublin and Wicklow. Inside the Dignity Bags were a variety of products such as clothes, food, toiletries, and many more. I think we all felt very proud at the end of the project and I would like to think that the work we have done has changed somebody's life immensely.
Kinsale Capital
On the week of Monday the 4th of December, I began my week's work experience in Kinsale Capital on Harcourt Street in Dublin.
Kinsale Capital is an investment management firm. I spent the week preparing for a presentation that was given to me on day one. The presentation had to be on a company that is listed on the stock market and I would have to give a presentation on why I picked my chosen company and if I was given money would I invest in the company.
The offices were situated on Harcourt Street. I was dropped to the Luas in Cherrywood every morning and I would get the Luas to right outside the offices.
The mornings started with a coffee and a read through some interesting news articles that were recommended to me by the workers in the office. The articles I read were very interesting and I learned a lot about the world of business and finance from them.
I think that it was very beneficial to see all the employees of the office at work and get a taste of what it is like to be in a working office and get a feel of the atmosphere. I discovered later on in the week that when it is time to work in an office, the employees really focus and concentrate hard on their work.
I really enjoyed the week in Kinsale and I am still very interested in a profession similar to one of a businessman.

Chemistry experiment
The titration of hydrochloric acid against sodium hydroxide.
I learned from the experiment that you have to be very careful when reading the measure of the liquid. You have to read it at eye level otherwise your results will be off and you will not have the correct conclusions.
Results from titration experiments
1. Acid: 27.6 Base: 25
2. Acid: 27.8 Base: 25
3. Acid: 27.7 Base:25

Ag Campáil
Chuamar ag campáil ar lá de torthaí an scrúdaithe. D'eirígh go h-an mhaith leis an mbliain sa Teastas Soisearach agus bhí aoibh mhaith ar ghach duine. Phacálamar ár málaí le eadaí, bia deas agus ar aghaidh linn go dtí an ionad campála i sleibhte Cill Mhantáin. Bhí sé dúshlánach an poball a chur suas ach deirigh linn ag an deireadh. Chuamar ar súiloíd fada ar an gcéad lá. Nuair a d'fhilleamar ar ais, rinneamar marshmellows thar an tine campála. Ar an dara lá, chuamar ag sléibhteoireacht agus ag snamh. Bhí BBQ againn agus bhíomar ag canadh timpeall an tine campála. Bá thaithí fiúntach é.
DCU Open Day
On Friday the 17th of November, our year headed off to the DCU open day. The DCU main campus is situated in Glasnevin, near the airport.
I attended 3 lectures throughout the course of the day. The first lecture I attended was the "Accounting and Finance" lecture held in the business block of the campus. Although this is a subject that I am interested in, I did not really enjoy this lecture and I don't think I would be rushing to DCU to do this course.
The second, and most worthwhile lecture I attended was the "Marketing, Innovation and Technology" lecture, better known as MInT. This was the most beneficial lecture in my opinion. The course looked very interesting and I would be quite keen to try it out.
The final lecture I attended was a " Biotechnology " lecture. Similar to the first lecture, I don't think I would be interested in doing this course in college.

9/11 Conspiracy Theories
Good evening ladies and gentlemen,
you might be looking at the title of my speech and be wondering why I have picked such a title to write about? When I was younger, I remember seeing an article on the internet with a video attatched reading "9/11: Conspiracy Theories and The Unanswered Questions." At first I looked at it like another piece of tabloid information but something in me urged me to read on and find out what th video had to say.
After reading the article and studying the video that followed, I had five questions that I needed to know the answers to. Now I know all of you have busy schedules so I will only be discussing two of the uncertainties I have.
The first conspiracy theory I would like to talk about is the "melted steel" conspiracy. It is a pure fact that jet fuel burns at 800 degrees to 1500 degress Fahrenheit, not hot enough to melt steel. For the fuel to burn the steel, it would have to reach 2750 degrees F.
The second conspiracy theory I would like to talk about is "why was the crash site at Shanksville, Pennsylvania, so small and why was the aircraft debris not visible?" Some conspiracy theorists argue that the plane was shot down by a missile and disintegrated in mid air, scattering the wreckage over a large area. However, official reports say there are clear photographs showing aircraft wreckage and the cockpit voice recorder, which showed there had been a passenger revolt and the hijackers had deliberately crashed the plane.
As you may notice, there are a lot of questions to be asked of about this tragic incident. In my opinion it is a very sensitive topic yet still very interesting.
thank you for your time.

Bull Running

Nutrition Talk
On Tuesday the 7th of November, a nutritional therapist came in to talk to our year about healthy eating and foods in which we should be eating less and less of. She displayed information on slides which discussed how certain foods could effect our health in the older stages of our lives. She then showed us an array of food products she had brought in including healthy smoothies, protein balls, and other nutritional products. I really enjoyed the talk and I think I took a lot from it.
Cooking Course
On Monday the 16th to Wednesday the 18th of October, I took part in a three day cooking course with Nikki Walsh in her house in Donnybrook. I did this course with six other classmates: Hugo, Jack, Hubie, Cillian, Daniel and Ben. The course began at 9am and finished at 3pm everyday.
At the beginning of everyday, Nikki would have a menu ready for us with three or four dishes that we would make that day. She would cook all of the dishes on the menu and show us how to cook them and we would have the dishes for our lunch.
On the first day we made a tomato soup and an apple and blackberry crumble. On the second day we each made our own loaf of brown soda bread. On the final day we made hamburgers and chicken nuggets.
I learned a lot from the course and I now have confidence when I cook.

Martial Arts Course
On Monday the 23rd of October and Tuesday the 24th, our year took part in a martial arts course in the sports hall.
We learned defensive as well as offensive techniques to use if you are a ever attacked when you are alone.
On the final day there was a fitness test to test how we would cope if a real fight was to occur. This was a five minute test consisting of sprints, punches, kicks, and so on.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the two day course and I now feel a lot more confident when I think of the idea of getting into a fight.

Film Review

Chemistry Project on Ernest Rutherford
Kairos
On Tuesday the 10th of Octobe my class attended the Kairos Communications programme in Maynooth. Kairos Communications has functioned for more than 30 years as a media production and training facility. The idea of the trip was to film a short piece of with the entire class involved. Our class decided on filming a fashion show, an interview, and the weather forecast.
My role was to be a model for the day. I wrapped myself in layers of tinfoil as I was supposed to have the appearance of a tin man. I spent the day sweating profoundly covered in the itchy tinfoil. The studio lights and cameras did not help whatsoever as they emitted a lot of heat and the thick sound proof walls kept all of the heat in.
Besides the unbearable heat, the day was very enjoyable and I relished the idea of being a camera man and a news anchor for one day.
Avoca Work Experience
On Monday the 25th of September I began my weeks work experience in Avoca Kilmacanogue. I spent the entire week working in the pastry kitchen alongside two other chefs. I designed and baked all sorts of cakes and cracked at least 700 eggs. The staff at Avoca could not have been any nicer to me. I learned so much in the short time I was there for. I would thoroughly recommend this placement to anyone who is interested in baking. It is very enjoyable and you also learn lots about working with others in a hectic and busy environment and getting things out on time. The bakers come in at 2am and leave at 10am. This just shows how dedicated they are to their work and was very inspiring for me to see.
Camping Trip
The Lough Dan camping trip was the best camping trip of my life. In fact, it has been the only camping trip of my life. However after this experience, I have a feeling that I will venture out on many many more.
From waking up with freezing cold feet to toasting marshmallows by the raging fire, I loved every minute of it. The smell of gas coming from portabl stoves is one that will stick with me for the rest of my life. Everything seemed to be just right whilst we were there. Even when the rain was lashing down we still found a way to have an enjoyable time in our tents.
The day day of the dreaded 20km hike came around and everyone was apprehensive as to what it would bring. The teachers did not help whatsoever with the anxiety of the students. They told stories of how previous years said it was the worst 4 hours of their poor lives. We set off early next morning and finished late afternoon. I had never been so tired in my life. When we reached our campsite, everybody fell down and collapsed onto the floor. Nobody cared that the grass was filthy and soaking wet. We all just wanted a lie down and a break for our overworked legs and from the torture of walking another step.
I felt that on the last night everyone came together and you could see the year as a whole really bonded and came together. I made a few new friends and made bonds with people I would not normally talk to. The camping trip was a really enjoyable experience and I give the school and the teachers a lot of praise for organising it and making it such a wonderful and unforgettable experience.

Difference Day in Tallaght
Although the school year has only just begun, I have been privileged enough to already have taken part in two " Make a Difference Days ". Myself, Hubie, Hugo, Josh, Jack and Daniel have all played our part in making a difference and helping others in the community.
On the first day of the project I was very tense and edgy of what the first day would bring. We arrived at the school in Tallaght where the project would be taking place. A company named Avalon decided that they would make a difference by completely changing the lives of the young children in St. Bridgids JNS, Tallaght. Avalon would be investing in a new playground for the school as well as a nature trail, outdoor classrooms, an indoor censory room, an outdoor censory room, a football pitch and much much more.
We spent the first day preparing and getting things in order for the big day the following week on the 12th of September where 250 Avalon employees would be leaving their offices' to come to Tallaght and help out. I was absolutely exhausted when I got home that night. We were lifting lots and lots of timber and digging many holes.
The big day came and everyone was dying to get into the work. Everyone had a smile on their face and even the weather was in sync with the mood of the group. I spent the day loading skips and gardening. I have never worked so hard in my life and it was very heart warming and satisfying to see the results and smiles of the children when the project was complete.
The slogan on the difference day badge is " One day, life changing" and this could not be more true. A simple act by one person can cause a rippling affect of joy and happiness for many more. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the crew and I am honoured to say I was a part of such a great cause.

Eagles Flight Workshop
On Friday the 22nd of September our year took part in the Eagles Flight Workshop. The Eagles Flight Workshop is a team bonding Workshop which focuses on leadership and teamwork. At the beginning of the workshop we were placed into teams of five to play a strategy game called " The Search for The Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine ". The idea of the game was to work as a group and mine as much gold as possible in 20 days whilst managing fuel, tents, and other resources. This was a very enjoyable game and I worked with people I wouldn't usually converse with or talk to during school. All in all I thoroughly enjoyed the day and I would definitely recommend Eagles Flight to any school that seem interested In the Workshop.
My Expectations For TY
This year in Transition Year I hope to achieve four major things.
I will start with the first task on the list which is to travel abroad to a different country. For the Leaving Cert I have chosen Spanish over French as my language and I would love to travel to Spain for a month and experience the pure language and culture of Spain in the flesh. I hope that in doing this I will understand the language a lot clearer and start to speak the language more fluently.
The second ambition on my list is to meet new people. Whilst in Spain, I am intrigued to acknowledge how different a teenagers life in Spain is to mine in Ireland. Meeting new people and experiencing new friendships and relationships also broadens your mind and takes you out of your comfort zone, which is all a part of growing up and developing into an adult. This task is very important to me and I hope by the end of the year I will have accomplished it.
The final two tasks are more work related and school based and will be of a paramount importance in the next three years of my life.
The third task on my list is to experience new opportunities. Throughout the course of my TY I have lined up a number of work experiences and hopefully by the end of these experiences I will have experienced lots of different real life job situations and have a more definite vision and understanding of what is actually expected of one in these roles.
The fourth and final task on my list is to by the end of this year have a vague idea of what line of work I would like to be involved in after school and what college course I would like to attend after my Leaving Cert. I know that I will most likely not accomplish this task but I would love to have a rough idea of what life after school will bring me.
